Nintendo Wii U

The Wii U is an upcoming video game console by Nintendo, and will be the successor to the Wii.The system was unveiled during Nintendo's press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2011 on June 7, 2011, and is expected to be released during the fourth quarter of 2012 in North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan. It will be the first entry in the eighth generation of video game consoles. The Wii U also features a new controller, called the GamePad, with an embedded touchscreen. The controller allows a player to continue playing certain games by displaying the game even when the television is off. At the E3 2012 expo, a second controller, called the Pro Controller, was unveiled, which is a more traditional gamepad. It features two analog sticks. The system will be backwards compatible with Wii, and Wii U games can support compatibility with Wii peripherals, such as the Wii Remote Plus and the Nunchuk. However, unlike the Wii, the Wii U will not be backwards compatible with Nintendo GameCube discs or peripherals, although games can be purchased and downloaded from Nintendo's Virtual Console service.

Sping Sping Sping Sping goes the WiiU advert

Over in the UK we now have our first WiiU advert and lets just say its.. SPING SPING SPING SPING.. .whoops... sorry about that. After watching this poor attempt at pushing a console I can't stop saying SPING.

The advert does show a few seconds of Mass Effect and Batman, but the advert looks to be heavy on pushing its crazy controls more than anything.

I’m still on the fence about this product, but as my partner is Nintendo crazy we pre-ordered our WiiU last night, but even she is disappointed at this attempt at an advert.

Watch the advert for yourself and let us know how you feel?

Will the Wii U change PC gaming for the better?

Now I know what you thinking ‘the Wii U has nothing to do with PC gaming’ and up to a couple of weeks ago I would be inclined to agree with you until I read into the specifications of Nintendo's up and coming console and what I found seemed very good, very good indeed.

At this moment in time the PC is held back graphically but the current gen consoles, PS3 and Xbox 360, due mainly to multi platform releases. This could change with the graphical power of the Wii U.

The Wii U uses a ‘Custom AMD Radeon-based High Definition GPU’, which is most likely to a custom AMD Radeon HD 6700M/HD 6600M with is better than the both the Xbox 360’s 500 MHz ATI Xenos and the PS3’s 550 MHz NVIDIA/SCEI RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' gfx cards.

This could mean that instead of getting a low spec Xbox 360 port a PC gamer might just avail of the Wii U graphical capabilities.

In a interview with Gamespot an Ubisoft employee said the following
“The central processing unit (CPU) of the Wii U is just as powerful as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and the graphics processing unit (GPU) is a one and half times as strong.”

It seems like good news for the average pc gamer and even better news for consumers as a whole.

How Mario on the WiiU should have looked

We all known Mario comes in many shapes and sizes, and the Mario franchise has had great success over the years.

I love it when Nintendo treats us to a new spin on a Mario game. One of my favourite styles of Mario has to be paper mario when that first came out on N64. I enjoyed how Sunshine Mario played on the Gamecube and fell in love with the style of Mario Galaxy for the Wii. Even the 3DS added depth to Super Mario 3DS and was one of the only games I fully enjoyed in 3D.

So at this week's E3 conference I was expecting a new style of Mario games for the WiiU but instead was given the same types of game as before just with one or two changes such as collecting lots of gold, or stickers.

I think Nintendo should have created a new style of Mario games for the launch of WiiU, and I couldn't have found a better image to express that than the one I found on reddit that was created by Orioto.

You can keep the mechanics of mario the same but by giving it a new look very similar to Ivy the Kiwi or A boy and his Blob it would have felt like they had spent time to Make a new game, and not just add a few extras to old existing titles.

I am not here to bad mouth mario games, but instead express I was disappointed we didn't get anything new.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Will you need a Money tree to play the Wii U?

No prices at E3 for the Wii U made me think that the system would likely follow status quo. $299 for the system and $59 per game. That was until today when posted their pre orders for Wii U games at an outrageous $99 per game! I hope this is some kind of joke but if not at $100 a game I will be passing on the Wii U. What do you guys think?

Wii U Graphics?

Back in E3 Reggie Fils-Aime shown us a demo of a flying bird and flapping fish and the promise of next generation graphics.

Developers have not been given a release date yet, but they are hard at work making games for the Wii U.

Vigil games the creators of Darksiders are working on turning Darksiders II in to a launch title but Marvin Donald the game director of Darksiders 2 said:
You know, so far the hardware’s been on par with what we have with the current generation’s. Based on what I understand, the, you know, the resolution and textures and polycounts and all that stuff, we’re not going to being doing anything to uprez the game, but we’ll take advantage of the controller for sure.
If this is true this means the Wii-U graphics will be on par with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 but will become outdated by 2014 when Xbox Durango is released, and the PlayStation 4 (by the looks of around 2015).
